What are the Benefits of Fasting?

How Fasting Can Help You Reach Your Next Level. Whether for spiritual growth or improved health, fasting WILL change your life.

The traditional form of fasting consists of abstaining from food and, or liquid. Fasting may even include avoiding any form of self gratification; sex, social media, television and even music. People fast for a number of reasons. Whether health related, to give the body a chance to self-regulate, to curb hunger and aid in portion control, or for spiritual balance and insight.

Fasting from food gives the digestive tract a rest which is known to improve digestion and rev up the metabolism. Maintaining a healthy internal balance can improve mental clarity, leaving room for innovative thoughts and ideas.

Fasting dates back Centuries and has been used throughout history to gain spiritual clarity and to establish a closer walk with God. Fasting before God and denying our flesh will strengthen the spirit.

Fasting for Spiritual Purposes

The “Esther” fast is one of the most powerful fasts noted in history. Esther was an unlikely queen during her time due to her Jewish background. She was married to a king who received counsel from someone who successfully convinced him to kill all the Jews in the area. Esther commissioned the Jewish community along with her handmaidens to join her on a three day fast. The fast consisted of refraining from both food and water.

During Esther’s time as queen no one was permitted inside the king’s court unless they were summoned by the king, not even the queen. Anyone who entered the king’s court unannounced was killed on the spot. Esther presented the fast to God to help soften the heart of her husband before she entered his court unannounced.

If Esther had chosen to remain subservient and had not tapped into her personal power she would not have had the confidence to put her faith to action to change history. Her works through her faith granted her the wisdom to know where her abilities ended and where God’s hand was needed.

When Esther entered the king’s court he was willing to give her anything she asked for. This included planning a feast although the king was unaware of the purpose, he agreed. Esther’s goal was to expose the culprit who intended harm against her and her people. When the king found out, the culprit was killed in their stead.

One of the more common spiritual fasts is the “Daniel Fast”. It consists of 21 days of produce while refraining from bread and meat. This fast was birthed during Daniels service as dream interpreter for King Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel fasted to gain insight from the Lord about the complex dream the king received. At the end of his fast it was revealed to him that spiritual warfare was the reason for the 21 day delay in the interpretation from God.

Goals and dreams of any kind can be delayed without us even knowing. Generational curses, personal offences against others, and direct curses from others can all be factors in our accomplishments being hindered. Fasting has been known to break the bands of wickedness and open the door to clarity and relief from spiritual bondage.

Matthew 17 shares how the disciples needed Jesus’ help casting out a demonic spirit due to their lack of faith as well as spiritual authority, dealing with a high level demon. Fasting for believers in Christ provides spiritual power over the enemy.

“And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Verse 21, Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” (Retrieved from the King James Version Bible)

Oftentimes we just need to get out of our own way, but if our shortcomings are deeper than a lack of discipline and self motivation fasting may help. It would be optimal to research different types of fasts and find the one that speaks to your heart.
